Is Oe a word? Oe meaning

OE

Oe is a poetic term for a small island.

It has Swedish, Danish and Gaelic origins. It's a doublet of "ea."

Sir Walter Raleigh coined the word in his poem "Harold the Dauntless." This work describes Harold's journey to acceptance of Christianity after his father's untimely death.

At the beginning of the poem, Harold's father, a Viking king, confesses his sins and converts to Christianity. Upon his father's death, Harold rejects Christianity and begins a journey filled with supernatural adventures. Harold's father appears to him as a ghost and eventually persuades him to convert. The story concludes with Harold's baptism and marriage.

This excerpt from "Harold the Dauntless" shows the original usage of the word "oe":

"I love my father's northern land, Where the dark pine-trees grow, And the bold Baltic's echoing strand Looks o'er each grassy oe. I love to mark the lingering sun, From Denmark loath to go, And leaving on the billows bright, To cheer the short-lived summer night, A path of ruddy glow."

From this poem, you may deduce that oe is pronounced like "oh," so it rhymes with "grow" and "glow."

Examples of Oe in a Sentence:

  • If you were stuck on a desert oe, what three books would you bring?
  • I would love to have my own private oe.
  • Grab the canoe; we're gonna row to that oe.
